Wendy C
CA

Hi! My name is Wendy Carrillo, I’m from East LA, by means of El Salvador! In August, I will start Grad School at USC focusing on a MA in Specialized Journalism with an emphasis on Latino Politics and the ’08 Pres. Election.

You should vote for me to be your political correspondent because I know the issues, and I am committed to representing the voice of the Latino community at this historic event. I am an active young democrat and have spoken and moderated many panels regarding education, youth, latinos and civic engagement. I make it a point to emphasize the importance of higher learning whenever possible.

With approx. 50k Latinos becoming 18 every month, it’s important that our ability to become an educated & organized political power house become a reality. To achieve this, we need to register, vote and force the candidates to address our needs. As a Latina and aspiring journalist, it's crucial to be active & engaged.

It's time to Respond, Report & Represent! Si se puede!

there was a rummor for a second that obama would choose a republican as a running mate... i dont think there was any truth in that, but i think Huckabee is smart in saying that by demonizing obama the GOP only sinks lower into what obama calls the "silly season" of politics, attempting to destroy the character of a person as oppose to addressing the issues. the GOP will need to learn how to deal with a diffrent style of politics and campaign, their approach needs to change. attacking michelle obama isnt going to help... im sure mrs. mccain would not like her dirty laundry aired...

Wendy is the #1 choice, She can ask the otugh questions, most people tiptoe around. Trust, I have seen her do it!

So, Wendy what do you make of Huckabee calling Obama a talented man and warning the GOP not to demonize Obama?

Ok,

Let us not waste anymore time trying to figure it out. Wendy Carrillo is the only choice to vote for.

As an activist, she has organized rallies, mentored youth at risk, worked with numerous state elected officials, and moderated many events that were socially conscious.

More than anything, Wendy is a fighter and motivator. She has been committed to enhancing the relations and the cooperation of all cultures.

I have tremendous respect for her because she understands more than most, that the answer resides in the self.

As such, I am endorsing and encouraging this rising star as the one you should all support.

If she was blessed with this chance, I am positive that she will be the best representative for this gift. She is a sister, friend and a daughter that respects life and liberty trough education.

Sincerely,

Ken Maxey

Political Consultant

Now, as the judges deliberate, BIG THANK YOU to SiTV and VotoLatino for being a network and organization that thought outside the box and made this competition possible.

I have learned a lot about myself through this contest and I’m walking away with two things, the notion that you don’t need to be Latino to help advance Latino issues and the knowledge that Young Latino Political Engagement is REAL and we all have proved it.

PEACE!

…keep voting! For me and in November!

I just voted for myself for the last time! hehe :)

If I am chosen to represent, I will try to the best of my abilities to be an inform representative of our diverse Latino American community, there are so many people here from all over the nation supporting the best RAZA has to offer! Thank you all for making this contest so incredible! We pulled together and have managed to roll out some pretty awesome GOTV! I'm very proud of you all and while the hours to vote will come to an end at midnight, all I got’s to say is this:

no matter where you come from or what you look like, if you have the right approach to life, and don’t make excuses for yourself, the world is your tortilla, to put on it whatever you wish! I’m just a girl from East LA with big dreams, and I don’t know about ya’ll, but the hood has been good to me!

I believe Wendy is the best candidate to represent me at the DNC because she understands.

Wendy does not have to feel what I feel to look out for me. This week, California extended marriage to homosexuals, and Wendy was one of the first to ask, "Are you getting married?"

I let out a big sigh. “No. My marriage is grandfathered in, because I got married in Canada, remember? This is good, because I really can't afford My Big Fat Gay Wedding right now!"

Though Wendy will probably never struggle in the ways that I do, that doesn't prevent her from minimizing her needs to be there for "the other."

I can always spot the aspiring journalist with the mic in her hand, nodding with empathy, thinking of a question that Barbara Walters would ask when all she cares about is how good this will look on her resume. Ugh. But with Wendy, she not only knows the issues, but actually cares about them. You can see it. And [dramatic pause] it's nice. ;)

This is why I want WC to represent me at the DNC.

I want Wendy Carrillo to be my political correspondent at the DNC. I have been lucky enough to work along side Ms. Carrillo in Many projects. I feel she will be committed to represent the voice of the Latino community during this historic event. History with a capital 'H' is going to be made at the DNC, no matter who the president-elect is. I want Wendy Carrillo to tell me how it all went down.

I believe that Wendy is the best person to report on the DNC because even as a mentor she ask the right questions to steer you in the right direction. She has helped me break into radio and I sit by her answering the phones, commenting and listening to how she poses questions and I have learned a great deal about not only radio but journalism. She always encourages me to strive higher and spots the right talent in people. I definetly want Wendy Carrillo representing me at the DNC as a Latina women and her mentie. She will ask the right questions and we will get the answers when she interview Obama. She has interviewed countless politicians and knows how to get her answers and the job done right. WENDY 2008!

Wow! Wendy, I just read the CBS and Magazine article. Didn’t know they wrote those 2 more articles about you. I know your the one to represent me. Don't know if I ever told you the story when I was about 13 in Jr. High, another boy who looked white but was also Latino put a sign on my back that said WETBACK, I told my friend why did he do that, I was born here, he thinks only white . I took me years to realize that, just because I was a brown little girl, I couldn’t be more then what they labeled me. So I took that sign and redefined what it meant....

WETBACK: Wet with sweat of labor in fields and factories-Strong back to lead a home, a nation; Break down: Daughter or Son of or Immigrant. University graduate with BA or a Master's degree ( Brain worth more then a quarter of a million $ in education). Walkouts, Brownouts, Walk for my rights, I walk for yours, Mentor, I cross my hand over my heart and pledge to the flag to become a citizen, privileged; Vote...Vote... Yes I can Vote!

Ask Obama when he will control gas prices and set caps on gas prices? In 2001 gas was 99cents now its almost at five times that, thats not inflation thats a rip off!!! Argh! And when he will impose cleaner fuel solutions, like corn or other natural material to set off prices.

As a future teacher, I want to have the flexibility to teach HISTORY! and I mean, not what the school district tells us what to teach. What is Senator Obama going to do to prove to the country that he's not just another politician that just promises things to the country in order to get votes only to NOT FULFILL said promises ? Does he actually plan on keeping those promises, to help the country for real, not just saying that he will ?

A note from Councilwoman De La Torre:

Wendy and campaign team - you have done a great job in leading your campaign and maintaining your position in the top two. But in the final days, in a race like this, where you are only a fraction of the votes from taking the win, you MUST work the GOTV. This is win or lose. Like in a real campaign you must push all day and all night until the “polls” close to ensure that you are the winning candidate.

So today and tomorrow, commit to doing nothing more than closing the gap and positioning yourself as the number #1 candidate to represent the thousands of individuals who voted you to become our voice at the DNC.

May the best WOMAN win!

AP - Barack Obama celebrated Father's Day by calling on black fathers, who he said are "missing from too many lives and too many homes," to become active in raising their children.

A first step in address the below comment. parent accountability. although we know NCLB does not work, children need parents to be a part of their lives. i would hope Obama's message does not fall on deaf ears.

Wendy, echoing Celia's sentiments, our next President has to decide what to do with No Child Left Behind, which left a lot of children behind, as old and tired as that opinion is.

I have no problem with the raising of standards for excellence, but how can our children be expected to produce when programs are not funded, when classroom sizes get larger, when faculty and staff are cut? We all know this was a plot to ensure the failure of our public schools, a thinly veiled attempt at more school vouchers.

Also, what is with that provision of NCLB that requires the name, number and address of every student to be handed to military recruiters unless the student or parent specifically opts out?

Education is a given--no one in their right mind will go on the record against it. What we need to know is how our next President will address primary and secondary education in the United States. Specifically, ask how NCLB will be fixed!

Senator Obama, as President, how will you make sure that the 65,000 undocumented students that graduate each year from high schools across the country contribute back to the country they now call home? How will we ensure that the investment this country makes on them through our public education system is not lost? What about those graduating from our universities? How will we make sure they practice their degree to contribute to our economy and make this country a better place?

Thank you for co-sponsoring the D.R.E.A.M Act in the past. Now as our possible next president, I hope that you exercise your power to ensure that our country integrate these students to ensure a better future for all of us.

“Finally, the naturalized Latino voter has Lifecycle advantage over native-born citizens that make them potentially more likely to vote. Native-born Latinos and Non-Latinos alike are ‘baptized’ into the political system at age eighteen when their interest in politics and rate of turnout are known to be very low. In contrast, as Ramirez (200) argues, many foreign-born Latinos have been politically baptized when the stakes are higher. Ramirez notes this is due to contextual factors, such as perceived attacks against immigrant rights…Who voted at a higher rates in response to Prop 187, and anti-Immigrant ballots…”-1

We can only change this through more knowledgeable mobilization targeted at Latinos and I believe Wendy can accomplish this through reporting at the DNC.

1) Latino Immigrants at the Polls: Foreign-Born Voter Turnout in the 2002 Election

In this new decade mobilization for Latino voters has been higher. Surprisingly Latino Foreign born citizens are more likely to participate in the political system then Non-Foreign born Latino citizens. This mean we native born Latinos take voting for granted and we shouldn’t, people fought hard for us to have this right in this country. We need to target the Latinos 18-25 because no matter the demographic this age group is the least likely to vote, with senior citizens being the highest. Second, help non-foreign born citizens see how important voting still is. We did see a change in this trend in the 2004 election. While working on Rock the Vote we registered a record breaking 1 million youth to vote. That year was a record breaking turn out for younger voters and we are seeing that many of Obama’s followers are youth wanting to see change in this post 911 era and I predict we will see a record breaking number of turnout for youth and Latinos this year as well.

Wow! I almost forgot about Bill Richardson. I think he needs to take up his Spanish surname, Latinos are more likely, actually will actually go out and vote if their is a candidate with a Spanish surname on the ballot (can’t find the study I read this in at moment, will look for it) So he will definitely get all of Hillary's Latino votes and then some. I think as long as Latinos know he is Latino he will definitely get Latinos vote but doesn’t hurt to get his Spanish Surname for the history books…lol.

The Obama – Hillary debate:

As of now, Hillary has congratulated Obama for gaining the lead in delegates, however, she still has not seceded from the campaign. She is trying to maintain control of her delegates and maybe secure her seat as VP. Once Obama is announced as the official nominee at the DNC, then he will need a VP with Military experience to combat McCain’s Veterans status and to lock in an exit strategy out of Iraq.

But as VP, I’m not too sold on that – Leticia’s comments may be right on point, this primary has been brutal for both. Can they really work that closely?

Although it might seem like a Dream Team, is it possible Hillary might be a more influential leader if she becomes Senate Majority leader or holds a Cabinet position?

I was at a results viewing party on Tuesday, and I spoke to young white people who told me they would love to see an Obama/Richardson ticket!

I was like WOW! Two people of color?! Is America really open to that? Or do we pretend?

Dear Friend,

Do you want to live in a country that legalizes discrimination?

Despite the recent California Supreme Court decision that

denying same-sex couples the right to marry is unconstitutional,

efforts are underway throughout the country to take away rights

from same-sex couples.

I just joined thousands of others in showing my support for

marriage equality for all. But recently, proponents of bigotry

and hate collected even more signatures in an attempt to

invalidate the California Supreme Court decision. And they won't

stop with California - extremists are even trying to add a

same-sex marriage ban to the U.S. Constitution.

We are at a turning point in our nation's history and I'm hoping

you'll join me in standing up against discrimination. Please

sign the Million for Marriage petition and get us one name

closer to showing that Americans overwhelmingly support marriage

equality!

http://www.MillionForMarriage.org

Every committed couple deserves to enjoy the privileges and

responsibilities conferred by marriage. Add your name to the

petition and be a part of the movement to fight for marriage

equality for all.

Thank you!

Panahon: I’m sure Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa would love to officiate your Big Fat Gay Wedding! Pink shirt and all! Just like he wore at Los Angeles Pride a few years ago =)

My grandfather was a Bracero worker, and the work of the United Farm Workers and Cesar Chavez was so important because it transcended the work in the fields. It was about equal rights for all. I’m sure Cesar would be proud of the progress we have made… however…

I’m worried about the ballot measure that will be on the Nov election that would reverse the California Supreme Court ruling to overturn the ban on gay marriage. Do the Stonewall Dems have a plan of action?

San Fernando City Councilwoman Maribel De La Torre endorses Wendy Carrillo to become the top Si TV and Voto Latino reporter at the 2008 Conventions

Los Angeles, CA, June 04, 2008. In a statement released by Councilwoman Maribel De La Torre from California, De La Torre expressed her endorsement of Wendy Carrillo to become the Si Tv reporter at the 2008 DNC and RNC.

“Wendy’s leadership, ethics, political knowledge and personality make her the ideal candidate to best represent the Latino community at both the DNC and the RNC. She is one of few reporters who can surgically dissect the issues as they affect Latinos and reports on how the affects have become intricately woven into the American landscape of the 21st century.”

Just as it is our responsibility to vote a great Democratic team into office, it is also our responsibility to vote the most qualified reporter to cover both conventions while representing and reporting on behalf of our community.

I got a message replying to my bulletin wishing for a Obama/Hillary Dream Ticket. And the gentlemen said if Hillary is not his running mate im voting for McCain. Though im sick of the Clintons, and would like Edwards to be the VP, i think its a risk to not have Clinton be the VP nominee. On the other hand, i believe we are sick of the Bush ppl in office and risk losing it to McCain if we dont have the Clinton supporters on board

I feel- completely unacceptable.

I don’t believe she should be on the ticket. Hillary has done everything in her power to keep the division in the party alive. Her stacking of her chips in attempt to strong arm her way into the White House as VP is again- shameful. Clearly her objective was to do just this. I don’t think she is aligned with the values of the Obama movement which is change. Hillary is not change, she is more of the same and comes with heavy baggage up to and including her husband, Bill Clinton- who has, by the way, completely lost my respect in this process.

I could obviously go on and on. But I won’t. I encourage everyone to Google Senator Jim Webb…my pick for VP or Bill Richardson. There are many other more viable choices. I couldn’t take 8 years of Hillary always trying to upstage our President, Barack Obama.

Peace

)- I realized what a great moment in time I have been fortunate to be a part of.

Barack Obama, the first nonwhite American to be nominated in a major party…a step away from the American Presidency, is so utterly important and fantastic. And I don’t care whether you are a Hillary supporter, a McCain supporter, a Republican, Independent…regardless of where you are politically-this is truly a defining moment for the United States. Just when you think the American Dream is dead, something this profound makes you realize, there is in fact hope. As a person of color myself- I could never say that I believed one of my children or even grand children could aspire to the presidency. Today, I know that is not the case. Obama has “opened the door” to what was until now an all white party.

Having said that- I think it is shameful that Hillary Clinton can’t bring herself to see the significance of this event in our history. For her not to even acknowledge it is –

Good Morning Wendy,

While here offering my daily support, I noticed your comment and want to respond. I hope we can get you to first place, I know all the candidates are deserving and would be great, but I think you be “greater” than anyone. I will continue to vote for you and hope that SiTV and Voto Latina see the exceptional value in having Ms. Carrillo represent!

To your comment:

Last night was absolutely historic. I am profoundly proud and encouraged today as an American. You know that I have been involved in the campaign and have supported Barack Obama since before he declared his candidacy. I always understood the significance of his campaign as well as the historical value- but I suppose that I was so “Obamafied” and involved in the movement that I had not allowed myself to fully grasp the implications of his nomination. Last night, when the numbers rolled around to and beyond 2118….and he officially became the nominee (non-officially, pending the convention)- I realize

Wendy,

One of the reasons I want to see you support me at the DNC is because you know how to bridge communities.

A few years ago we were talking, as we often do, about the issues-- the importance of immigration reform, the second-class citizenship of gay Americans, etc.--and you brought it all together when you poignantly asked, “Have you ever considered the idea that there are homosexuals at the border?”

Then you brought up the late César Chávez and his longstanding support for homosexuals. Your point? Let’s work together.

I’m sure you know that Mayor Villaraigosa said he would officiate over as many same-sex weddings as possible (since the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage.) With that, what do you think the odds are of Mayor Villaraigosa officiating My Big Fat Gay Wedding?

Best of luck to you in this contest! I know that your presence at the DNC ensures every perspective will be represented.

these are very exciting times!!! obama is the 1st african american nominee in the history of our coutry! alhtough he is in the lead in delegates, the associated press reported hillary clinton will not be discussing delegate count and might stay in the race! not sure how this will play out as far as her becoming VP! she is risking a lot! however, if obama does become the nominee, he has a tough battle against mccain, he will need to address issues on race, american's original sin of slavery, and go up against a military hero, who aligns himself with a bush legacy that is not very popular...omg!!! so exciting! its like a movie waiting to be written. i really wonder who obama will choose as a running mate...

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for you comment. Very nicely said. For the most part, I think all contestants want what you stated, to unite together, support our heritage and to be proud of whomever is chosen to represent SiTV and Voto Latino at the Democratic National Convention.

Every contestant is brilliant in their own way and should be appreciated for the contributions they make. The negative comments that have been posted have taken away from the representation of each contestant and that has been very unfortunate. However, I hope that we can move forward and concentrate on how our next President will take on the issues that will be affecting our community the most. Again, thanks for writing, and keep representing young Latinas!

Wendy =)

I am only sixteen years old, so I guess some would consider me a "kid." Growing up in a predominantly hispanic, poverty-stricken neighborhood and having witnessed first-hand the types of improvements needed for our society enables me to appreciate your taking a stand on the issues. However, I would like to respectfully add my opinion that Mr. Iniguez also has the qualities necessary to represent at the convention.

As for Penahon G, I too know about fallacies because I am an EDUCATED "kid." I know about hasty generalizations that categorize teenagers. I know about Red Herrings that change the subject from Mr. Ininguez's stance on the issues to the comments left by SOME of his students. I can also support the ad hominem fallicy that attacks this man's character as a teacher because of a few students rather than focusing on his political views.

Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to ask people to stop judging one another and to stick together as Latinos.

Thank You

Wendy,

The negative comments remind me of the ad hominem fallacy, but this isn't a lecture on rhetoric.

This contest is about your ability to represent your community, which you have been doing, professionally, since late 2006. It takes a lot to produce a radio show every Sunday morning for the 1.3M listeners of Knowledge is Power on Power 106, and you've demonstrated that you can get informed, book guests and ask the tough questions that members of the community want answers to.

Keep up the good work. Your community is very proud of you.

Just when we think our Latino community can be supportive of all of our differences, or when we think the hateful and hurtful comments like the below would stop, someone has to come in and mess it up for the people that are actually community activist, political and engaged in discussions that matter to our society. I would encourage everyone to disregard the comment, as it is obviously childish, insensitive, and everything that we are trying to avoid. I will let SiTV handle it.

Today is the birthday of former President John F. Kennedy, assassinated before he had the opportunity to change this country. Let’s remember him by holding in our thoughts his youngest brother, Senator Ted Kennedy, as he battles cancer.

“Ask not what you’re country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country!”

ahhh… truer words couldn’t ring any louder.

hola mujer!

we need to get you up there! wendy is a great role model for other young latinas aspiring to do something with their lives. wendy has always been there with ideas, time, and her endless support to whatever cause needs help. i listen to her radio show and saw her speak at UCLA at the Empower Change Summit last year with President Bill Clinton. She hosted the Community Empowerment panel with SiTV artist Malverde and young students who gave an amazing discussion on the CA Dream Act. She has the ability like the below comments demonstrate, to move within so many circles, be it entertainment, politics, and grass roots. She should be the one to represent us at the Democratic National Convention! We need more brown eyed, non-blonde, educated Latinas in television! SiTV and Voto Latino need to select her!

You got my vote Wendy!

Obama needs to offer Hillary the VP and she should take it to present a united Democratic front especially after all the Mayhem that occured for the Presidential Nomination. Basically we got to fix our image one and two Obama needs the Hillary supporters to beat out McCain. I like Edwards doesnt move me, doesnt hit my emotions in anyway.

lol. You guys are so funny. Powerhouse tickets are sold out!

But on the real, thank you to all the voters who continuously come to the site and post such beautiful remarks. And thank you SiTV for clearing up that rule. Much appreciated.

As a community organizer, it’s great to see so many of you come back and support me this time around. I am truly blessed to know you all. 2 kudos. :)

I’m passing around midnight coffee a la Facebook status!

Today, on MySpace I saw the first Obama vs. McCain Face Off graphic!!! Very exciting!

Change vs. War Vet… it’s going to be a tough election. I wonder what all the Hillary delegates are thinking as they prepare to head out to the DNC and get her nominated. It seems the majority of the media has already excluded her from the campaign.

Here are some preguntas… will Hillary make a better President or a better Woman of Power in the Senate? Will she accept being Vice President?

Wendy has not only been recognized as a leader in the Latino community, but she has connected with the African American committee as well. We have seen how recent headlines were made here in Los Angeles with Latino and Black youth not getting along.

We support Wendy and her efforts to bring young people together, this election is not just about Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, it’s about the change our nation needs to see. Wendy is around change everyday with the work she does in communities of color. She needs to be the one to represent us at the DNC. I might just watch SiTV because of her!

I really feel strongly about Wendy as a representative for the Crash The Party, Voto Latino search. Wendy is as strong on the mic as off. She doesn't just "talk" about what's right, she does it, walks it, is commited to the advancement of young people. When so many of them don't have a voice it can make a big difference to have a sister speaking up for them and their rights. Wendy can make things happen, and she should be up there repping for, not just our people, but anyone that cares about what right.

Paz,

Carmelita

Wendy is a bicultural journalist, educator, and entertainer. She can dialogue with the biggest names in music, as well as with those who would occupy the White House and other seats of political power. The stories I’ve seen her cover include: ages 12 to 34 lifestyle series, campaign customization for outreach purposes, pop culture and politics mash-ups, as well as good old fashioned documented news that celebrates Latinos who navigate their own cultures, as well as the cultures of the Asians, Anglos, African Americans, and indigenous peoples they interact with.

Wendy is a product of postmodernism and hip hop. She knows music is built around classic samples, ancient traditions, and new technologies. She knows art can be defiant and subversive one second, and commercial and cliché the next. That inspiration can be communicated from the sketch in a school notebook and come to life when bombed in graffiti or placed in an urban poster stencil, through a viral post that flies through Facebook and YouTube, or by an artist that drops everything and decided that a verse about changing the world is worth more than platinum records, sold-out concerts, and merchandise sales.

SíTV, Voto Latino, & all us MTV Tr3 viewers, need Wendy to Crash the August 2008 Party in Denver.

History with a capital 'H' is going to be made at the DNC, no matter who the president-elect is. I want Wendy Carrillo to tell me how it all went down.

thanks for that leti! you are right. I'm a host. i was a reporter up until a year ago when i was writing for a small little independent paper. that was my louis lane stint. haha. mostly, now, ive i let other people who have a lot more knowledge on the issues speak their minds about a topic, what i do is moderate the conversation and engage the listeners of our station, its actually a pretty cool gig! i love doing it! but i would also love the opportunity to report for sitv and vote latino! its time to RESPOND, REPORT AND REPRESENT AT THE DNC!

Thanks for the shout out leti! and for your vote!!!

Knowledge is Power with Wendy Carrillo

Sundays 7-8am!

Knowledge is Power is Power 106’s community based show. Hosted by Wendy Carrillo, Knowledge is Power brings you the latest that is going down in your communities. Ranging from education, politics, health, social consciousness, gentrification, economics, grass roots organizing, women and LGBT issues, Knowledge is Power gets the issues that concern YOU, the listener, on the air.

Communications 101...so the difference between a reporter and a host is that a host invites guest onto a show to discuss issues, such as Oprah does on her show. A host is not a reporter, because a reporter actually reports the issues...just so you know...for anyone who may have an interest

I strongly support Wendy Carrillo for the Voto Latino "Crash the Party" contest. She has shown her commitment to activating and energizing young voters and very much deserves this honor.

Through her radio show, community activism and campaign volunteering she has shown that she has heart and passion for increasing young people's participation in their neighborhoods and issues that are important to them.

Wendy tackles issues of race, politics and today's social ills with thoughtfulness and an open mind - and while she has strong opinions of her own, she always allows for an open dialog and discussion.

Wendy might not have hundreds of students to vote for her everyday, but she does have the support of civic and community leaders in Los Angeles and would be a wonderful representative for Crash the Party in '08.

Panahon! Yes, NAFTA is something that has divided a lot of people. It really depends on the state you are in! Mid Western states have lost a lot of the manufacturing jobs because of it, now what are they suppose to do for jobs? General Motors is a grand example of that. Some would argue though, that we get lower costs in the end… but at what price?

Also, nothing is made in the US anymore! Not even the Flag Pins that everyone wants Obama to wear! They are made in China! So, even if we try to buy “American Made” to boost the economy, it’s either really expensive or hard to find! And with the US in a recession, most Americans are spending their stimulus checks catch up on bills or buy gas. So Global Economy… ufff… tough issue indeed!

On California Supreme Court Ruling to overturn to the ban on gay marriage, anytime we get to see a Republican judge look beyond his personal issues and look at the rights of citizens, is a step in the right direction. Democrats should pay heed to that!

On a sad note, Senator Ted Kennedy is doing really bad in his health. Doctors found a malignant tumor in his brain =( we all know about John F Kennedy, and Robert F Kennedy, two of our nations greatest leaders… Senator Kennedy is the last living of the four brothers =(

While campaigning for Obama, Kennedy busted out in a Mariachi Song! Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdl86KNkt_M and while at East LA College, before the California primary, he said (and I am paraphrasing) “the eyes of the world…are going to be focused here to see if the Latino community would be taking a little time, to study the issues”

So Gente! Let’s talk issues!

As Obama gains the lead in Super Delegates, looks like we may have a nominee before the DNC! Ariana Huffington wrote a pretty amazing blog entry about the work of Hillary Clinton, when you get a chance, read it!

Hi everyone! Thank you for your continued votes and support! There are a couple of things I wanted to share, for all my under 18 supporters who are so politically active here is Cali, there is HOPE! There is a new Assembly Bill – AB1819, that will allow you to pre-register to vote! This is a very exciting thing for California! But before it becomes law, you need to support it! So log onto to www.youngdems.org and learn what you can do so that more young people participate and become engaged in our political process!

As this is The Year of the Young Voter, I heard yesterday that one of Hillary’s top supporters offered the Young Democrats of America $1million dollars in an attempt to allegedly buy the vote of the 2 undecided Super Delegates of the organization. (shocking!) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/19/superdelegates-turned-dow_n_102450.html

hi wendy! 1st time voting! didnt know about you being a part of this! i will keep voting! saw your comment below... i think mccain is worried about all his ties w/ big bad washington politics. obama has the support of the people, he has been against corporate interest money since his campaign started, mostly because of his vision of CHANGE. its going to be interesting how it all takes turn once the DNC is over... as far as who the nominee will be... mc cain is already targeting michelle obama... which is obama said, is just low class.

As long as I have know, Wendy, she has been active in her community. To this day bearing the scars as a result of civil war in her homeland, El Salvador, is something she wears with pride. Her fight continues to this day for her fellow Latinos. She is clearly the best candidate for this competition. Although votes do bear some weight in this contest, comments are considered. So every negative comment left by anyone on someone else's profile is considered and may cause harm to the contestant they are supporting. The judge frown upon any rude comments. Also, not only candidates with the most votes but the judges decision is final outcome to this competition. Again, it is not votes but qualifications that will decide the ultimate winner. Look at all the love you've found!

Again, I'm proud to be supporting you, and I really believe that you are - on an absolute level - the only truly qualified person to represent me at the DNC. Proof is in the comments and support that people are showing. Proof is in WHO is telling you again and again that you are the right person to rep us. Proof is in your achievements, your fervent belief in the possiblity of change, and in your commitment to your community.

I voted today, and will continue to do so until it's all over.

The fight continues.

Wendy, though you and I might disagree on trade, I am comforted by the fact that your background in business guarantees that you will not leave the Democratic National Convention without straight talk on the future of our global economy.

I imagine a discussion on national security and protectionist sentiment, which prompts an anti-immigrant supporter to speak their mind, while you introduce the idea that the work of immigrants can help the economy. Marriage equality comes up now and then, especially since the California Supreme Court recently struck down the ban on marriage for homosexuals, and you could ask people what states should do with added income tax revenue resulting from the so-called “marriage penalty.” Your ability to smoothly tie topics together ensures business issues will get covered without people getting defensive.

I am glad you are doing this. I want to see you representing me at the DNC.

Wendy is one of the strongest candidates we have who will represent our voice at the conventions. As one who is able to traverse boundaries and lines, she continues to push forward issues that matter to our community. Her voice will represent one of the strongest for social justice and I am positive her presence will open a window for all to view. Let’s send Wendy to the conventions and support her throughout the coming month while voting continues. I fully support her and all that she stands for. Vote now!

also, on yahoo news, there was an article on mccain and his new policies on lobbyist who work for him... check it out! i know some of my supporters are republicans (working together!)... i would like to know what you all think about mccains financial co-chair stepping down...mccains new staffing rules indicates that one one who is or has been a lobbyist works for him or is paid staff. obama has been a big time advocate of not taking lobbyist money for corporate interest... what does that say about mccains strategy against obama and the democrats?

And leti! i just saw the news brief of today's event in oregon with obama! how great! so many people who want to get involved and believe in his message. it looks like he might just win the nomination for the democratic party. i also saw an add by mccain where he is already targeting him as his major opponent. they are calling him a "radical liberal" wow.

you need to check out The Daily Show w/ John Stewart, he did a great montage of West Virgina voters and the "white vote" and how they are scared Obama is muslim and black! i wonder how they feel about latinos!intense!

btw Paul, to address your comment... so happy about the supreme court ruling to overturn the ban on gay marriage in california!! i know both hillary and obama have had issues coming out (no pun intended) with a clear stance on gay marriage. its a civil rights issue and i hope the democrats take the white house and we begin to see change become a reality. :)

congrats on your new found freedom!

hi wendy! I have been voting for you every day, and the comment below about immigration reform made me want to comment. I have been reading and I am ashamed on how you are being targeted… I don’t think the person who made the comment really understands that you were talking about the Dream Act being a pathway for students to become citizens either through college or through military service. Immigration reform begins with education. That is the simplicity you were referring too. As someone who has benefited from Marcos Firebaugh’s AB540 but have had a rough time paying for college, I appreciate you being the only contestant to address the specifics of the Federal Dream Act, something which Obama and Hillary have advocated for, but said very little about. I hope that you win this contest and make that one of your questions, as you know how much it affects not only our Latino community, but other ethnicities as well. I wish you much luck and I hope you get to represent us at the DNC!

hey wendy. I am sorry about my classmates posting rude comments. We are not all like that though. Mr. Iniguez is an amazing teacher and he constantly tells us not to leave any hate comments, they just dont listen. He is getting us involved and excited about the elections, just like he makes class fun and interesting for us. That is why some of the students are getting defensive over him. They dont like it when people leave mean comments about him. im sorry about all of this.

and when people are online... they do not write as if they are writing a paper. Most of these so called "kids" are really smart. and i bet most people would be defensive over someone they cared about as well. So if anyone thinks its so immature, they should not be leaving rude comments as well, because that is immature as well. Good Luck Wendy [: and im sorry.

You are exactly the type of leader we need at the DNC because you have the courage to ask the difficult questions, probing stances, pushing on responses. Your history on power 106 and your commitment to community issues, and Latino issues is incredibly impressive. SITV would be lucky to have you represent this new programming.

As the Vice President of Green Dot Public Schools, I know that you have public education at the top of your list. Kudos to Prof PJ and Comm 101! so... i was reading the headlines over here to the right of this comment box, i was struck by this:

"Hearing a loud noise and interrupting his speech, Huckabee said: "That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he — he dove for the floor." There were only a few murmurs in the crowd after the remark. The Obama campaign had no comment."

Ok ok, I'll comment. Mostly because I honor your determination, (or is it, insanity?) at posting bulletins on MySpace at 2 a.m. Ha. We've come along way from watching The War Room in Campaign Comm. Chica.

Ps. To whomever designed the U.I. on these comment boards, please redo the script so they don't automatically erase whenever a user clicks in the enter field. Vote for me for new media correspondent. HA.

Wendy,

Without a doubt you ought to be our political correspondent! You have quickly earned my respect and the respect of many of my colleagues working in various political offices.

You have intelligentlly and objectively covered the many issues that have affected the Latino community since I've been working for Mayor Villaraigosa, and I admire your fairness. You understand the complexities of politics, political decisions, and politicians, and it's what makes you an effective voice and advocate.

Thank you for all that you have done for our great City of Los Angeles, and thank you for your tireless commitment to enhancing the lives of Latinos.

Hope to see you at the DNC!!

I too have to apologize for a thoughtless comment made by my young cousin. He is a bit over zealous about this race and took it upon himself to make a childish comment. It is not in good sportsmanship and does not reflect who I am. I wish you the best of luck!!

Wendy,

I too am excited that so many young people are coming out to vote in this contest! I have urged my supporters to not post any negative comments on your or anyone else's page. It is at your discretion to delete these senseless remarks, however, I want you to know once again that I do not condone these messages. I also want to make it very clear that these negative comments are not a reflection of me or my ideals... there is absolutely no way that I can regulate what my supporters want to express. I can only hope that they post positive messages to others.

Each of us brings something very exciting and unique to this contest and I know that whoever is chosen will represent well! Congrats on SC..... but remember that a Trojan is only good once but a Bruin is FOREVER!!!! UCLA FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!

well... he had to come out! he just voted in North Carolina... but... his wife voted for Hillary... so while their popular vote cancels each other, he is a super delegate, so this is major for Obama! will we see an Obama/Edwards bumper sticker soon? or would Edwards make a better Attorney General?? hmmmm/??? ahhhh!! exciting! let's see what happens next!

As far as Edward's endorsement, I am not a bit surprised! Smart move, in my opinion. If I can imagine his thoughts, it may be something along the lines of "ok, at the rate Hilliary is going she is not gonna be on the ticket as v.p. so if I play my cards right, I may not end up president but I could possibley be vice president" And that My friends is politics for ya!

Alona,

To address your question on police brutality, YES! That’s defiantly an issue. We have seen how the militarization of our schools, especially inner city schools, is affecting communities of color. We all saw what went down at Lock High School just a few days ago. By the time you call the police, the issue is bigger and a band-aid doesn’t help.

The authorities and the media said it was a race issue, Black kids and Latino kids don’t like each other… is that the truth? I really don’t think so. I think the issue is far simpler.

Its not that we cant get along, but our lack of resources and our economic status plays a big role.

But the question to the candidates would start with the No Child Left Behind Act… which puts all blame on teachers. It has proven useless. Teachers are not solely responsible for the education of a kid, where you grow up and the issues that you have to deal with also play a big role. What about the parents? Community?

So… what can we do to fix the NCLB?

I believe Wendy would be the perfect person to represent Latinos at the converntion. She herself has both an Immigrant perpective as well as a Chicana one growing up in East Los. She is well educated and headed to USC Graduate school....GO TROJANS!!! Her show covers a vast area of political, social, health, and movements in the Southern California area and she reaches over 1 million listeners. She knows our culture and knows what is important to us as Latinos! She is a role model to young latinas everywhere, she was inspiration to all the young girls at the Adelante Mujer Conference last month. I was ready to give up on politics, me who has a BA in Political Science from USC myself. But she made me look at the bigger issues and how important it was to decide. So wendy you got my endorsemnt. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER 106! USC GO! FIGHT! WIN!

Hi Wendy,

I am an avid listener of your radio show "Knowledge is Power" and I have been voting for you in this contest. I was wondering what your plan is for the convention? What kind of questions will you be asking folks. Who do you plan on interviewing?

Will you be able to speak with Barack Obama (it appears he will be the nominee) and can you ask him to make a commitment to a Federal Dream Act and other Immigration issues? What do you think?

It is amazing to see a Chicanadoreña like Wendy Carrillo represent EastLA. Ms. Carrillo represents the “NEW” face of Chicano-LAndia, they are brilliant, articulate, well-educated, involved, committed to reach and build bridges across race, ethnic, gender and class divide. As a native born Angelino-Californiano, I say Ms. Carrillo’s labor of love public-service program on Power 106 indicates the level of commitment from the young and talented LA. She can best represent LA. And, as they say, “As goes L.A., goes California”, and “as California goes, so goes the nation”. So Adelante Wendy, CRASH THE PARTIES ON VOTO LATINO!

Thank you to everyone that has voted and continues to vote!

I want to address one thing to all the candidates that are running and that have their friends, family, students, and loved ones voting…

This is not a forum to be insulting or petty. Any comments posted on my page that includes hate messages or insults will be removed. Maybe not promptly, but they will get deleted.

BUT, any comments where you want to engage in political discussion are off course, welcomed!

Let’s remember that this is a competition, all the potential reporters are passionate and that’s awesome! However, only one of us will be able to go to the DNC.

At the end of the day, we want to support one another, not tear each other apart.

I wish you all a spirited campaign!
